Delwater actively supports the Scouting movement in the Philippines.

Scouting has always been in the blood that flows through a Delgado’s veins starting from the late Ambassador Antonio Delgado who, in 1971, became the first Filipino Chairman of the World Scout Committee.

Jose Eduardo C. Delgado (JED), President of Delwater and a son of the late Ambassador, was part of the 600-man Philippine contingent to the World Scout Jamboree in Japan in 1971.  Jose Paolo L. Delgado (JPD), son of JED and Director for Business Development of Delwater, went to the World Jamboree in the Netherlands in 1991.  Both 2nd and 3rd generation Delgados joined the Philippine contingent to the recently concluded World Scouting Jamboree in England in July 2007.

A second-generation Delgado was also part of a 24-member Philippine contingent to the 11th World Scout Jamboree in Greece who perished in a plane crash in 1963.

Jose Eduardo C. Delgado, President of Delwater, and Jose Paolo L. Delgado, Director for Business Development of Delwater, respectively, were both key proponents of a major tree planting initiative aimed at regreening the famed walled city of Intramuros held on January 10, 2009.

Father and son Delgado are both active Boy Scouts, the elder Delgado being a member of the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines and the person behind the Boy Scout’s “Go Green! Go for the Real Thing!” program.  Paolo Delgado, on the other hand, is an Eagle Scout, the highest rank a Boy Scout can reach as a youth Scout.  Ed Delgado is presently the President and CEO of Delbros Incorporated while Paolo Delgado is a member of the Delbros Board.

The tree planting activity was participated in by several high profile personalities and Non-Governmental Organizations.

MAY 24, 2008 ‚Äì Jose Eduardo C. Delgado (JED), President of Delbros, Inc. and Delbros Waterfront Leasing Co., Inc. led more than 300 Scouts, Scouters, Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) officials, and guests in launching the “Go Green, Go for the Real Thing” project at the BSP National Office compound in Ermita, Manila.

The “Go Green, Go for the Real Thing” (GO GREEN) project is undoubtedly the biggest and most significant project of the Boy Scouts in recent times. It is a joint undertaking between the BSP and The Coca Cola Export Corporation (CCEC), wherein the latter is bankrolling the entire project including the creation of tree nurseries in designated BSP properties nationwide.

The GO GREEN project was conceptualized about two years ago by JED, who concurrently serves as BSP`s National Program Commissioner and member of the BSP National Executive Board (BSP-NEB), and JB Baylon, Vice President and Director of Public Affairs & Communication of CCEC.

According to JED, “The project`s primary objective is not just to plant at least 100 thousand tree seedlings over the next five years, but also to nurture them until their chances of surviving into fully grown trees will already be much higher.”

Even this early JED is already confident that the BSP will easily surpass the 100 thousand target as several other complementary activities under the GO GREEN project are already being prepared.

Essentially a plant propagation and activity concept, GO GREEN is project-managed by the BSP National Program Division. According to Sophie Castillo, BSP Program Assistant, the project is aimed at “emphasizing among Boy Scouts the importance of trees in our environment.”

“Through GO GREEN more Scouts are expected to learn more about trees and hopefully encouraged to plant and take good care of more trees.” Castillo added.

Among those who graced the launching event were: Mayor Fred Lim of the City of Manila; David Lyons, President and CEO of Coca-Cola Bottlers Phils. Inc.; Baylon; JED; and several members of the BSP-NEB. #

The 2008 planning conference informally commenced on the evening of November 11 with the now-traditional get-together dinner and fellowship. The day took twice as much significance as it also marked JED`s 53rd birthday. The conference lasted until November 15.

Tacloban City is the latest addition in Delwater’s growing network of branches nationwide, with the Delwater-Tacloban branch commencing operation in July-August this year. This is the primary reason the city was chosen as the venue of the semi-annual planning conference.

Tacloban, the biggest city in Leyte, also happens to be a city rich in historical significance. The city is well-known for its role in World War II, being a major base for the US forces and the first town liberated by Douglas MacArthur`s forces from the Japanese Imperial Forces shortly after he fulfilled his famous “I Shall Return” promise. For a time, it served as the capital of the Philippines while Manila was under Japanese control. For several decades, Tacloban was just a barrio of Basey (now Samar province).

The exact venue of the planning conference, Hotel Alejandro, is itself a historic landmark. It is literally a time capsule with its impressive collection of War-time photos and memorabilia.

In his opening remarks, JED invited his management team to “travel in time” with him some time in 1944-45, when the biggest Naval battle in history was unfolding in Leyte Gulf. He drew parallelism on the big planning and decision making challenges that confronted Gen. MacArthur and the country`s leaders at that time and the ones that Delwater`s management has to deal with to survive and lead in today`s competitive business environment and realities.

The tone for the planning conference was set after the reading of MacArthur`s “I have returned” speech by Delwater`s legal counsel, Atty. Juanito R. Carlos.“…Rally to me. Let the indomitable spirit of Bataan and Corregidor lead on… rise and strike. Strike at every favorable opportunity. For your homes and hearths, strike! JED also found (and was deeply moved by) a not-so-well-known speech given by Gen. MacArthur when he returned to the Philippines in the early `60s, near the end of his life`s journey. JED shared this to the conference participants.

And then it was down to pure business discussions up until November 15, with each manager presenting his project line-up and business outlook for his department or area of responsibility in 2008.

The next planning conference is tentatively set in April 2008 with Delwater-Palawan as host. /RUS
